I Am A Front End Developer Who Is Looking To Grow Into Something More

If I have learned anything over the last five years since I started getting into web development, is that I absolutely love what I do, and am a slave to quality.

For years, I have worked as a web developer primarily focused on the Frontend with JavaScript and its many frameworks, with pivots to Ruby on Rails, PHP / Wordpress / Pimcore, along with Vue & Node. My experience ranges from small early stage startups to large enterprise level companies. Over time, I have been responsible for developing a range of different products including custom content management / live-service applications, brochure and multi-site applications, WCAG compliant frontend frameworks, spikes and subsequent epics, and been the frontrunner in various efforts towards making projects I am involved with as WCAG compliant as possible given time constraints. I'm not a massive fan of writing tests (not that I wont!) but like most things in life, not everything is perfect in any given profession. I understand why they're such linchpin elements to any customer-facing large project, but knowing this doesn't make it any more palatable. Basically, tests are Pepto Bismol; works great but tastes awful.

I am confident my experience and strive to stay adept in the practice of front-end development as my skill-sets advance, though I am always eager to expand my horizons into becoming something more. Specifically, I'd love to get more involved with backend projects or finding more ways to leverage AI at work. What a time to be alive with AI at our fingertips!

I look forward to discussing my background further and to meet you and your team for future collaboration.

Jumpcloud

As a Software Engineer, I worked on various projects towards achieving the goals set by the Growth Department and in doing so, I did the following:

  • Worked on various projects ranging from component creation & refactoring, test suite creation & refactoring, documentation creation, assisting QA, and project lead responsibilities (info gathering, ticket creation, etc.).
  • Refamiliarized myself with Git, JIRA, and Agile practices while learning Vue / React patterns along with Node.js / Docker processes. Performed multiple Spikes which reached across teams and departments to assist team objectives.

My team was responsible for the repo surrounding the front-facing signup process, along with enforcing full test coverage.

BIS Global / Charity Engine

As Front End Developer, I worked on high profile client sites and forms, maintaining aging infrastructure for:

  • Forms that handled tens-of-thousands of donations, which generated tens of millions of dollars
  • Consumer facing client sites with unique currency restrictions, handling conversion and user design.

Assist in continued efforts to improve and evolve the functions and design of the webapp, CharityEngine

Grafik Digital

Build, test, and deploy site designs from provided InVision / InDesign / Sketch mockups. Wordpress dev using ACF to create custom components, update legacy components, and maintain WCAG AA compliance across all projects. Interface with clients to explain requirements and set expectations while balancing multiple projects. Prototype and develop finalized front-ends for various Pimcore projects.

Worked diligently and successfully migrated old practices ( using FTP for all file transactions / no AGILE / no CICD / no Git ) into a modern dev practice. Pushed for moving away from jQuery and into ES5/6.

Zuffa ( UFC )

Build, test, and deploy site designs from provided images/HTML mockups. Create or work on import applications. Sites worked on include GUI’s for the World Surf League, Drone Racing League, and UFC.

Travelled the world to train clients in new software suites, breaching language barriers and adhering to strict travel schedules.

Greater Washington Publishing &
Society of Technical Communication

Rebuild flagship websites using Rails 5 + Mapbox, be a Scrum Master, aid in on-boarding of new members to dev team, primary researcher in both BED and FED technologies needed for various projects.

Teach Front End Development starting at basic HTML / CSS / JS along with intermediate and advanced material ( preprocessors, AJAX / API usage, JS libraries, Git, deployment )

JBS International

Aid various departments in Full-Stack development roles (largely Front-End focused), develop in an Agile environment, convert site designs into light-weight and semantic HTML and CSS markup code that is optimized for desktop & mobile; use W3C validator and 508 web accessibility evaluation tools for semantic web standards.

0ptimus Consulting LLC

With 0ptimus, I built several enterprise-level websites, restructured legacy front-ends with updated visual designs and cleaner UX/DI, create internal tools for large-scale data-crunching and calculating, integrate python into rails environments, evaluate and improve internal tools with smarter front-end / more stable back-end. I owe these guys a lot for taking me under their wing and giving me the means to learn as much as I have. A very smart shop with very smart people working for them.

General Assembly

When I graduated from Teacher's Assistant to Teacher, I was given a smaller class to get to know my students more intimately. I mimicked the same curriculum from my TA position but changed the methods up, resulting in more advanced topics covered beyond what was offered in General Assembly's online discription of the course. Specifically, we got into PreProcessors (HAML / SASS) and other industry tools that I felt were mandatory in the web dev world (Github, Git, Terminal / Command Line).

General Assembly

In this 10-week course, students learn to code, speak the language and implement their own designs by learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. As a Teacher, I actively lectured in front of 30+ individuals, graded homework assignments, created content per class needs, and lead several discussions on advanced topics. This is the job that made me realize how much I had been missing out by not teaching sooner-- I was able to find a happy marriage between my love of helping people with skills that can sincerely help them in their personal lives beyond anecdotal concepts.

Transit Labs LLC

I redesigned the corporate site in adherence to design mock-ups, maintained their WordPress site, pioneered their Data Visualization projects (Highcharts / D3 + Crossfilter), and rapidly deployed said data-vis projects as requested by the project manager.

General Assembly

This company ( specifically the Washington D.C. branch, where rock-star Jesse Shawl was one of my instructors ) is magic. This is where my career as a Web Developer really kicked off. I still have friends from the class I was in and still work with them on various projects. For anyone looking to either skip college or are looking for a course-correction from their current career path, I can't recommend General Assembly enough.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Sold rental insurance to people who didn't need it with such efficiency that it actually threw me into a state of depression. I have nothing against ERAC, but I felt wholly disingenuous about the whole process, and caught myself recommending different solutions to friends than what I sold to strangers. This was the point of no return; this is when I started to really delve into CodeAcademy and reveal to myself that "code" is more than the floaty green letters in "The Matrix" and that I really enjoyed playing with it.

George Mason University

Learned fundamentals and advanced communication theories, including best practices in business environments, planning strategies, interpersonal relations, crisis management and journalism. I absolutely loved the academic side to college and the critical thinking aspet of Journalism; gather data, compile it, present it absent of filters in hopes to start a narrative. I'd say a large part of my intellectual growth occured here.
